“Antimicrobial resistance is a silent crisis; collective science is our loudest response. ”
Dr. Cindy Teh Shuan Ju is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, and a leading researcher in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Her research focuses on multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, integrating molecular microbiology, genomics, microbiome studies, and infection prevention to better understand resistance mechanisms, virulence, transmission dynamics, and the impact of antibiotics on patients’ microbiomes. She also investigates behavioural and psychosocial factors influencing healthcare workers’ compliance with infection control practices, while actively promoting AMR awareness through community outreach and educational initiatives. Dr. Teh has secured more than RM12 million in research funding from Malaysian government agencies, international organisations, and industry partners, and has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications. Her contributions have been recognised nationally and internationally through prestigious awards, including the L’Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Fellowship (2021) and the MSIDC-Institut Mérieux Young Researcher Award (2018). She has been a member of the Young Scientists Network–Academy of Sciences Malaysia since 2018 and deeply committed to research mentorship. To date, she has successfully graduated 9 PhD and 21 Master's students in the field of microbiology and AMR.
