“Local surveillance, global preparedness.”
Dr. Tan Cheng Siang is a virologist and molecular epidemiologist at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak with a strong interest in One Health and emerging infectious diseases. He was awarded the SEAOHUN Fellowship in 2017, which strengthened his interdisciplinary training in One Health and zoonotic disease surveillance. His research focuses on understanding how infectious diseases spread between humans, animals, and the environment using molecular and genomic approaches. He has worked extensively on pathogens such as human papillomavirus, rotavirus, coronaviruses, and other zoonotic viruses in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak. His work also includes wastewater surveillance and public health monitoring to support early detection of disease outbreaks. Dr. Tan actively collaborates with local and international partners across medical, veterinary, and environmental fields to strengthen infectious disease surveillance and preparedness through integrated One Health and molecular epidemiology research.
