Dr Bryan Wee is a genomics scientist specialising in the molecular epidemiology of microbial pathogens. He is currently a Senior Scientist at the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC), Malaysia. He obtained his PhD in microbial genomics from the University of Queensland and has held research appointments in Australia and Scotland, where he led and contributed to pathogen genomics initiatives spanning diverse infectious agents. Dr Wee’s research focuses on applying genomic approaches to understand pathogen transmission, evolution, and disease dynamics. His work spans both human and animal health, adopting a One Health framework to investigate infectious diseases at the human–animal–environment interface across settings in both the Global North and South. He has developed strong expertise in the generation and analysis of high-resolution genomic data, including the implementation of long-read sequencing platforms such as Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) and Pacific Biosciences (PacBio), enabling improved genome assembly, variant detection, and characterisation of complex pathogens. He is actively engaged in international collaborations and consortia, contributing to capacity building, knowledge exchange, and the advancement of genomic surveillance globally. His work integrates genomics with public health priorities, with a focus on translating scientific insights into actionable outcomes.
