“Advancing infectious disease diagnostics through genomics, collaboration, and a One Health approach to improve outcomes for both human and animal health”

Bio

Dr Siobhon Egan is a Lecturer and Research Fellow at Murdoch University and an early career molecular infectious disease scientist specialising in a One Health approach. Her expertise spans molecular diagnostics, microbial genomics, parasitology, and computational biology, with a strong focus on translating genomic technologies into diagnostic and public health applications. She completed her PhD in 2022 at Murdoch University, investigating the molecular ecology of ticks and vector-borne pathogens in Australia using high-throughput sequencing. She has since contributed to major nationally funded research programs (ARC and NHMRC) and led collaborations with national diagnostic providers, supporting assay development, laboratory quality systems, and accredited workflows. Dr Egan is also dedicated to teaching and capacity building. She coordinates undergraduate and post-graduate units in Laboratory Medicine and Infectious Disease, developing curriculum in laboratory science and genomics. She leads international laboratory strengthening initiatives with the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre, focusing on biosafety, workforce training, and diagnostic capability. She supervises Honours, Master’s, and PhD students and has received awards for research excellence, including the Sinnecker-Kunz Early Career Researcher Award (2021) and an Australian Academy of Science Fellowship to attend the 72nd Lindau Nobel Meeting (2023). She has authored 38 peer-reviewed publications.
